Updates on our Staff

Our very own Patti Bennett was featured in January’s issue of 5280. The CYAR staff nominated Patti, with the help from Community Shares, for a makeover back in October of 2007. Who knew that she would be picked! Check out www.5280.com and look for the January 2008 issue.

We have added two new people to our staff. We would like to welcome Barb Pyle, our new Administrative Assistant and Reggie White, our new Program Administrator. Barb has been involved with Colorado Youth at Risk as a mentor and volunteer. Reggie has been through Steps Ahead and has volunteered with CYAR in the community. Welcome!!

STEPS AHEAD 6

Late August we successfully kicked off the second year of the Steps Ahead 6 program. We had more than 67% of the youth and 55% of the mentors from year one continue on to year two. Martha recruited 17 new youth to join that program and Andrea recruited 15 new mentors. The program team did a brilliant job completing one program and bringing together the “new” group with the “old” group over two days at the Auraria campus.

The Steps Ahead 6 program is now serving 44 youth with 44 mentors until May of 2008.

MANUAL 3

Excellent news!! We have secured a significant portion of funds needed to do a Fall Steps Ahead program with 40 students from the new Manual High School. We have been meeting with the Manual High principal and he his thrilled that we will be joining the team of people working to have that school be successful. Martha already has an office in the building! Denver Human Services (DHS) will be funding a significant portion of our fall launch course through the Youth Mentoring Collaborative. Mile High United Way is working with the principal of Manual High to supplement the funds for the year long program. The launch course will be Nov. 1-4th, so mark your calendars so you will be able to attend!

Manual 3 will serve 40 students this November through October of 2008.

TOUCHSTONE

Touchstone kicked off in late August starting a new school year with 30 juniors and 20 seniors participating in Touchstone at GWHS. This is the largest number of youth served in Touchstone in one school. Our efforts to concentrate on continued service to the youth is working. 16 of the juniors are participating in the Leader’s Challenge program because of our support and 11 seniors will be applying for the Daniels Fund Scholarship with our support.

Touchstone is serving 50 youth at GWHS in Touchstone.

This will be the first time EVER that we have managed 3 Steps Ahead programs at one time. We are growing, we are serving kids and in the words of one of the youth from Steps Ahead 6…we are saving lives.

Thank you to everyone who is contributing time and money to make this happen!!

Mustache 4 Cash is presented by The Youth Opportunity Foundation.
